Description
Hours of laborious love and attention to detail is evident in the gorgeous wood interior of a 1936 Ford woodie station wagon. Gleaming wood paneling throughout with matching interior finished with red touches that matches the exterior of the vehicle, is stunning in it's perfection and execution. Not surprisingly, this vehicle is a car show prize winner.
The term “Station Wagon” was applied to these sedan-based cars as they were designed to haul both luggage and guests from the train stations to the nearest resort or hotel. Years later, these wagons became known as “Woody” wagons due to its construction.
Station wagons from this era were all built out of wood by specialty firms that took delivery of the completed chassis and its cut-away body. Then, both the interior and required bodywork were added before shipping it back to the manufacturer for final assembly and inspection. This was a time consuming and costly procedure.
In 1936 Ford opened its station wagon assembly line at its Iron Mountain mill. This allowed Ford to fabricate and assemble at one site. Fit and finish improved as inspections could be completed immediately after the wagon left the assembly line. The popular 1936 Ford Woodie Station Wagon featured roll-up front glass windows with canvas side curtains fitted with transparent resinglass plastic windows that could be fixed in place for additional protection from the elements.
In 1936 Ford delivered 7,044 Woodie Station Wagons. And although produced in relatively high numbers in comparison to other makes, the Ford has become the icon in Woodie Wagons. As a result, the Ford Woodie Station Wagon is one of the most prized by collectors today.
