Description
Perched atop a stalk of millet, (which gives you an idea of the size of the bird), a tiny Northern Pygmy owl, glares at the intruding photographer with a steely-eyed gaze. “If you don’t leave soon, I will take you on and leave no prisoners” it seems to say. …. “OK!” I can take a hint! We don’t want that!” replies the photographer and whooo then promptly leaves.
The northern pygmy owl (Glaucidium gnoma) is a small owl native to western North America.
These fist-sized owls are mostly dark brown and white, with long tails, smoothly rounded heads, and piercing yellow eyes. They hunt during the day by sitting quietly and surprising their prey.
It is a ferocious predator, often preying on small mammals and birds equivalent to it's size.
