Description
With outstretched wings and making a splash of the waters, two trumpeter swans break the silence of an early morning. Flapping their wings and seeming not to notice most other wildlife and other goings-on, this dance seemed to signal the preliminary start of a courtship ritual.
Every year Trumpeter Swans pass through the southeastern region of British Columbia, usually once in the fall, and then again in the late winter on their migratory path. This image was taken on one of those stop-overs on Kootenay Lake, British Columbia, Canada.
The largest of the migratory large birds in North America, the Trumpeter Swan faced near extinction in the 1930's before conservation efforts and the discovery of several large flocks in Alaska helped to rebound thier numbers. Hunting these magnificent birds, which played a very large part in thier near demise, is now outlawed in the United States.
