Description
A great horned owlet closes his eyes and sleeps. A nocturnal bird who hunts by night and normally sleeps by day, the Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) is found throughout most of North America and much of South America. This juvenile owl, seen in wilds of Canada, is in the fledgling stage, where it is starting to fly from branch to branch, gaining strength, but not yet ready to leave the nest entirely. It's parents will watch after it and continue to bring it food for several months to come. Covered by a downy soft fur at birth, it's feathers gradually come in, replacing the fur as it matures.
Great Horned Owls are a big owl which is aggressive and powerful in its hunting (sometimes known by nicknames such as "tiger owl"), it takes prey as varied as rabbits, hawks, snakes, and even skunks, and will even attack porcupines, often with fatal results for both prey and predator. Great Horned Owls begin nesting very early in the north, and their deep hoots may be heard rolling across the forest on mid-winter nights.
